We extend the idea of congruences to polynomials with coefficients in a field. The properties of congruences for polynomials are very similar to those for congruences for integers. In particular, the Chinese remainder theorem is valid for polynomials. We develop the ideas in this chapter, and give some applications of the Chinese remainder theorem in the next.
