Abstract

In conventional gray-scale ultrasonography, echoes returned from tissues are processed so that an image can be displayed to include both bright boundary specular reflections at interfaces between resolvable structures of different acoustic impedance and gray shade textures within tissues arising from acoustic interactions with structures much smaller than the wavelength of the sound (microstructure). Although, such images provide a highly useful real-time view of anatomic structures and their movement, changes in tissue microstructure (ex. early stage cirrhosis or fibrosis, fetal lung maturation process) often cannot be visually detected.
