The thermodynamic principles discussed in the previous chapters describe the potential for Joule-Thomson cryocooling, and define the constraints and conditions within which they are viable cryocoolers. However, it is the detail of their actual construction that transforms the potential into reality. Many constraints associated with the practical aspects of construction and configuration are not addressed in the domain of thermodynamic principles, and yet when considered, lead us to a wide variety of structures. Design concerns take us back to the earliest stage of cryogenics, in the year of 1895 when Linde and Hampson proposed different construction approaches for the recuperators in their inventions. This chapter complements the previous one concerning modes of operation. The details of configuration and construction enable the various modes of operation.
