Abstract

Around the year 2000, there are more astronomers active worldwide than ever lived before 1950, and new methods and instruments have never been developed at a rapid pace. No wonder that by far the most revolutionary discoveries in astronomy date from recent decades. That is not a distorted view of history but a hard fact; as a scientific discipline, astronomy is currently undergoing faster growth and development than ever before.
