Abstract
The purpose of the Global Environment Monitoring System – Food Contamination Monitoring and Assessment Programme (commonly referred to as GEMS/Food) is to collect, collate, and report on levels and trends of chemical contaminants in food, their contribution to total diet, and their significance with regard to public health. The role of GEMS/Food in promoting total diet studies through a series of international and regional workshops and training courses beginning in 1999 is described. Other initiatives by GEMS/Food and its network of collaborating center and participating institutions is also presented.
