Abstract

The formal mathematical treatment of the symmetry of physical systems discussed in Chap.1 is called group theory. This chapter summarizes the fundamental properties of group theory that will be used to treat physical examples of symmetry in the succeeding chapters. This book is focused on the practical use of group theory and does not attempt to cover derivations of the fundamental postulates or advanced aspects of this topic.
