Abstract
Pneumonia is an infection of the alveoli, distal airways and interstitium of the lung. The Infectious Disease Society of America/American Thoracic Society (IDS/ATS) consensus guidelines have established diagnostic and treatment recommendations for patients with community-acquired pneumonia. When treatment failures occur the physician must think outside these guidelines and reevaluate the patient for causes such as rare or atypical organisms, an impaired host immune response, or noninfectious causes of pneumonitis.
