There are two distinct ways in which the commercial world is involved in observing the earth from space. One way is for a commercial company to build an earthobserving satellite and sell the images to anyone willing to pay for them - whether they are in the public or the private sector. Companies such as GeoEye, Digital Globe and SPOT Image fall into this category.
