Abstract

In 1964, two engineers from Martin Marietta ran in circles through a Colorado wheat field with a handmade balsa wood and paper glider. The model was a perfectly scaled mock-up of a reentry vehicle they had been working on for several months. Their stubby “lifting-body” was a precursor to the modern space shuttles, and they wanted to see how it behaved before they sent a more expensive version into wind tunnel tests at NASA’s Ames Research Center.
