Holmes’ Comet

Comets are the most erratic members of the Solar System. We never quite know how they are going to behave, and one of them, known officially as Comet 17P/Holmes, has given us a real surprise. Last October, it suddenly flared up from magnitude 17 to 2.5, and in less than 48 hours had brightened by a factor of over a million. Nothing quite like this had ever been seen before.
