Abstract

There are many glorious sights in Nature, but to me, as I have often said there is nothing even remotely comparable with a total eclipse of the Sun. For the few moments, when the brilliant solar disk is fully covered by the Moon, everything seems to be put into a state of suspended animation; only the sky changes. I am not surprised that ancient peoples were frightened and in backward countries this is still true. An annular eclipse is fascinating, but no more, and it is hard to become really enthusiastic about one that is partial.
