Operations Research(OR) theorists and practitioners recognized early that the flow of goods within an organization constituted an important field of study. The transportation and storage of such goods provided them with a fertile area for modeling and analysis. Before long, these problems evolved into the field of logistics, which spanned the procurement, distribution, maintenance, and replacement of material and personnel. The fruitful interplay between logistics and OR methodologies started in the 1950s and continues to this day as logistics assumed its current name of supply chain management. And, from the start, chief among the developers of logistics was Murray Geisler.
