What is a Species?
A number of years ago, I had a student who was convinced that she had a pet that was half cat and half rabbit. She was certain that her pet had a parent of each species, and when I could not convince her that was impossible, I challenged her to bring the animal in so I could have a look at it. As it turned out, the animal was a variety of stub-tailed cat known as a Manx, which we will talk about in the following chapter. I offered to open it up and show her that its internal anatomy was all cat, but she declined, ostensibly, at any rate, accepting my argument.
