Abstract

So you have now taken many photographs of the Moon and you want to put them on display. How can you identify what they show? There are many books and references to help, examples of which are given in the Appendix of this book. The commonly used Hatfield Lunar Atlas divides the Moon into 16 areas, so it seems reasonable to select one of your pictures for each of those sections, as shown in Fig. 5.1. Consult this atlas or a similar reference to help with identifying features within the images. The diagram shows the approximate regions corresponding to each area. Note also that the orientation of the Moon with respect to its north-south axis is shown as actually seen, also known as binocular view.
