Abstract

It is often noted (by me for a start) that astronomy is one of the few sciences in which the amateur can perform not simply a useful role but, in many of its fields, play an essential part in contributing time consuming, laborious (unpaid!), yet invaluable observations to professional research. Part of this usefulness derives from the amateurs’ outnumbering of professionals by several orders of magnitude.
