Dark Energy and an Accelerating Universe

  • Martin Beech

Dark energy is an enigma. It could be one of the greatest discoveries of modern cosmology, or it might not exist at all – being but a cruel artifact of the presently available data. For once the theoretical physicists are stumped and collectively they can offer no explanation for what dark energy, if it is real, could be due to. The situation is challenging and remarkable, and while astronomers can point to data that suggests the possible existence of dark energy, no one can currently explain why such a strange situation should come about.
