Abstract

In this chapter, we take a close look at the three distinct friction-induced instability mechanisms mentioned in Chap. 1. We start with the negative damping instability mechanism in Sect. 4.1. To demonstrate the role of friction, we analyze the well-known mass-on-a-conveyor model with a decreasing coefficient of friction function with sliding velocity. Both eigenvalue analysis method and the method of averaging are used to study this system. The material covered in this section serves as an introduction to Chap. 5 where we study the negative damping instability mechanism in the lead screw drives.
