Chapter 2:

Page 40, last paragraph: The last item (currently item (4) in the list) should not be part of the numbered list – it belongs to the regular running text, and so this number “(4)” must be removed.

Chapter 3:

Page 72, formula (3.2): The upper limit of the integral must be “z”, not “2”. P. 92, the 1st formula from the top, for S² _L: the term in parentheses must be raised to the power of 2. Thus, the correct formula is

$$S^2_L = \frac{1}{L-1}\sum_{j=1}^L n_j \left(\bar{x}_j - \bar{x}\right)^2,$$

P. 92: the 3d formula from the top, for $\bar{S}^2$: the term in parentheses must be raised to the power of 2. Thus, the correct formula is

$$\bar{S}^2 = \frac{1}{N-L}\sum_{j=1}^L\sum_{i=1}^{n_j} \left(\bar{x}_{ij} - \bar{x}_j\right)^2.$$

Chapter 4: P. 118, the 2d formula from top: the nominator and denominator must be switched (“l ₁” in the nominator and “l ₂” in the denominator). Thus, the correct formula is

$$x=\frac{l_1}{l_2}P_2.$$

P. 125, 2d line after expression (4.14): replace “1.96” with “1.96σ ”.

P. 129, the second stand-alone line of formulas from top: in the left-most formula, replace “x ⁱ ” with “x _i ”.

In the line that follows, replace the second occurrence of “dQ/dà <0” with “dQ/dà > 0”.

Chapter 5:

P. 164, formula (5.41): replace the four occurrences of “w,₁” with, respectively, “w ₁”, “w ₂”, “w ₃”, and “w ₄”. P. 165, 2d formula from top: Remove “k” from the first occurrence of “$k\sqrt{3}$”.

Chapter 6:

P. 179, 2d line from bottom: Replace “Sect. 8.2” with “Sect. 6.2”.

Chapter 7:

P. 198, 4^th textual line from top (“… and substituting it into the expression for y”): Replace “y” with “Δy”.

P. 198, the line just before the 2d stand-alone formula from bottom: the last term in the left-hand side of the expression there should have index “L” and not “2”. Thus the full formula must read:

$$g_2 + g_2 + \cdots g_L = 1 - g_1$$

P. 206: The inequality .(x _max − x _min ≤ 2Δ in the middle of the page misses label “(7.19)”.

Chapter 8: P. 214: The first stand-alone formula from top: the sign “=” is missing after C _in.

P. 229, 2d paragraph from the beginning of sec. 8.6.2. In the 3d line of this paragraph, add a space between “m” and “as” in “. . . retaining mas…”.

P. 237: In the end of the second paragraph from bottom replace table numbers “8.6” and “8.7” with, respectively, “8.9” and “8.10”.
