Laparoscopic Approaches to Pancreatic Endocrine Tumors

Minimally Invasive Cancer Management

Abstract

Pancreatic endocrine tumors (PETs) are rare. Resection is the only curative treatment [1, 2]. A brief overview of the pathophysiology and classification of PETs along with epidemiology and survival data is presented. The role of various diagnostic imaging modalities is discussed and appropriate patient selection is presented as a guide. Laparoscopic and hand-assisted laparoscopic (HALS) approaches to distal pancreatectomy, with and without preservation of the spleen, laparoscopic enucleation, and briefly laparoscopic pancreaticoduodenectomy are discussed, highlighting the pros and cons of each approach. Finally, the application of surgical robotics during laparoscopic pancreatic resections will be described, focusing on the specific advantages of this technology.
