A short retrospective of our recent history in space

Part of the Space Exploration book series (PRAXIS)

This essay1 provides the reader with a brief historical overview on how we came to be a spacefaring people during the 22nd century. We will focus on the early postApollo era on Earth more than one hundred and fifty years ago, the difficulties faced by those who proposed an accelerated space program, how our grandparents and parents were finally able to colonize the Moon and Mars, and how we began our young lunar and Martian civilizations. While it is hard to imagine the present without these outposts of human civilization, the beginning of the 21st century saw our predecessor generations concerned primarily with the day-to-day, completely ignoring how future generations would benefit from a development into space.
