The Role of Self-Awareness and Communication in Issues of Health and Aging

Human life is sustained by a continuous interplay between the mind and the body. Without a mind, an able body has no direction. Without a body, an active mind has no way to act. The mind–body reality of most individuals falls between these two extremes. You use your mind to direct your body so that you can reach desired goals during your lifetime. In fact, your goals in life are heavily influenced by the natural strength and skill of your body systems. Likewise, your sense of personal achievement is influenced directly by changes in the performance capabilities of your body.

The first observer of the state of your mind–body relationship is you. It is the purpose of this chapter to discuss how objective self-awareness and effective communication of your mind–body state to your health care providers can reduce stress and improve your quality of life as you experience the effects of aging.
