The Songwriting Works™ Model: Enhancing Brain Health and Fitness Through Collaborative Musical Composition and Performance

The author began developing the Songwriting Works™ method 20 years ago. More than 3,000 older adults across the cognitive spectrum have participated to date; they have composed and performed more than 300 songs. This chapter outlines basic principles of the Songwriting Works model and the practices through which its outcomes are fostered and measured. Case studies illustrate impacts of the collective songwriting experience within culturally and cognitively diverse communities. Research underlying and supporting Songwriting Works’ methodology, including Dr. Theresa Allison’s music’s study of the model in a skilled nursing context, is cited. Implications and applications are explored.
