Abstract

Physical therapists diagnose and manage conditions that cause movement dysfunction which affect an individual’s physical and functional ability. They work toward restoring, maintaining, and promoting not only optimal physical function, but optimal wellness, fitness, and quality of life as it relates to movement and health. Physical therapists provide interventions which prevent the onset and progression of impairments, activity limitations, and participation restrictions that may result from diseases, disorders, conditions, or injuries (Guide to Physical Therapist Practice, 2001). Physical therapists, as an integral part of a multidisciplinary team, collaborate with other members such as physicians, psychologists, dentists, nurses, social workers, occupational therapists, nutritionists, and speech language pathologists, to maximize patient outcomes. By implementing a family-centered approach to determine the best plan of care, the physical therapist strives to improve the child’s and family’s quality of life.
