Abstract

With the rise of varied forms of electronic communications has come the need to converge these communication streams into integrated forms known as . Presently, this involves the integration of primarily real-time services, such as instant messaging, telephony (voice over IP, or VOIP), and video conferencing. Unified communications allows messages to be sent through one medium and received on a different medium. Though VOIP was well adopted by enterprises at the time of its inception, there remained a clear desire to extend the functionality to other forms of communication—for example, being able to leave voice-mail messages in mailboxes instead of on proprietary voice-mail systems.
