Plugins: When the Time Is Right

If you’ve ever used WordPress before (and probably even if you haven’t), you should be aware of WordPress plugins. Plugins are tools that allow users to extend the functionality of WordPress in a variety of ways, from adding SEO management features to managing spam commenters, and even turning WordPress into a fully capable e-commerce store. The plugin API was introduced way back in version 1.2 (Mingus), just 1 year into the development of WordPress in 2004. Since then, more than 25,000 plugins have been uploaded to the plugin directory at (see Figure 9-1) with more than 450 million downloads.
