In the summer of 1998 I began Ray Of Light Productions (rayoflight.net), as a creative exercise using Flash on the Internet. My intention was then, as it is now, to create experiences on the web through animation, graphics and sound. At that time Flash and Flash web sites were still in their early stages of development, and much of the work being produced was considered revolutionary. There was no such thing as ActionScript, and most Flash effects were put together using clever tricks. Because I learnt Flash by battling through tutorials and online help, I worked completely oblivious to any best practices or particular authorial preferences; I just worked things out my own way. Many of the effects I put together on Ray of Light Productions were effects traditionally associated with the more widely accepted mediums like television and cinema.
