I think the first commercial database package I came into contact with was Lotus 1-2-3. My dad had just bought a PC, and it came loaded with Lotus SmartSuite. I remember opening it up and thinking, “What on earth is this?” and promptly closing it again. Let’s just say it was never exactly the most used piece of software on that machine. A few years later, he bought another new PC. This one had Microsoft Office on it. Again, I investigated all the new stuff. “Access, eh?” Click. “Argh, it’s one of those database things again! No fun!” I then proceeded to laugh at all the clip art and forgot all about databases for quite a few years.
