Live Tiles and Notifications
This chapter explores the ways your application can communicate with the user, even when the application is not running, by means of live tiles, notifications, and by customizing the lock screen. Live tiles and notifications establish a conversation with the user that is dynamic but unobtrusive. A live tile on the Start screen is the store front to your application, inviting people to use the application and giving a peek to what's featured inside (see Figure 10-1). Notifications update the user with critical information displayed in the tile, as a toast in the system tray or as raw information sent directly to your application. When the screen is locked and the live tiles are not available, the lock screen allows you to notify the user of status changes.
