Nuclear Power

Practical Solution or Environmental Disaster?
  • Robert Rapier

Abstract

When nuclear power was first commercialized in the mid-1950s, it was widely viewed as an almost magical solution for the electricity needs of a growing global population. One pound of uranium-235 can produce two to three million times as much electricity as one pound of coal or oili—but without producing any emissions. Scientists and the general public alike were enthusiastic about the abundance of cheap, clean energy that nuclear power promised.
