SharePoint Architecture–File System, Database, and the Provider Pattern

  • Dave Milner

Reading Tip This chapter is helpful for building more depth in understanding the components that make up SharePoint 2010.

The next step in building our understanding of SharePoint as a product is to get into details regarding artifacts of SharePoint 2010 that work together to comprise the product itself. While we have already introduced some of these concepts in previous chapters, in this chapter, we will endeavor to take a cross-section of the SharePoint product, looking at it from a more traditional ASP.NET understanding. We’ll examine files in the file system, study SQL Server databases, and scrutinize a software development design pattern that has grown into one that is prevalent throughout .NET software development and the ASP.NET framework, the Provider pattern.
