Key Utility Tools for Text & Archives

  • Scott Granneman

Productivity has become something of a cottage industry in the last few years, with blogs (such as Lifehacker, at, books (Getting Things Done: The Art of Stress-Free Productivity, by David Allen (Penguin, 2002), is a sacred text), and even videos (just search YouTube for productivity tips). Many people would argue that Mac OS X itself makes people more productive than other operating systems, due to its elegance, logic, and consistency, but even the most knowledgeable Mac user can always add new software that helps him work more efficiently. In this chapter, I’m going to look at two types of utility tools that can help people get things done on their Macs: macro expanders that automatically insert text, and archiving and compression tools.
