Abstract

Because there are many performance-monitoring methods, selecting the most appropriate methods that lead to a successful optimization strategy may prove to be a difficult task. This chapter begins by providing recommended starting points for performance monitoring when performance problems are reported to the DBA. Next, this chapter demonstrates the usage of several performance-monitoring methods while troubleshooting three types of performance problems, switching between the various monitoring methods as necessary. Finally, this chapter describes several common performance optimization issues, the most appropriate method to attack those issues, and several strategy guidelines that affect the course of the optimization method.
