A Partly Cloudy Future

  • Jeremiah Wilton

Abstract

Regardless of his own relentless use of the terms grid, real, and flashback in ways that are less than exact, I can’t really blame Oracle founder and CEO Larry Ellison for being irritated by the term cloud computing. Lately, you see it everywhere. Marketing departments, bloggers, and the industry press toss around the term without a clear understanding of what it is. The confusion among pundits is resulting in widespread public confusion over cloud computing. If we are to believe vendor behemoths Amazon.com, Google, Salesforce.com, Sun Microsystems, Oracle, and best of all, Microsoft, each possesses the one true cloud solution. Never mind that each is referring to completely dissimilar offerings.
