Cary Millsap was my mentor long before we ever met. Shortly after I began working with the Oracle database around 1996, I began to find papers he had written. The first one must have been his now famous “OFA Standard: Oracle for Open Systems” paper, but there were others that I read and reread those first few years. Although I was new to Oracle, his writings made complete sense to me when so much of the documentation and writings on Oracle were confusing or contradictory. I knew that I needed to master the concepts mentioned in these papers if I ever hoped to master Oracle, and unlike anything I’d come across in my studies or work experience, Oracle had grabbed my attention. There was so much to discover in how it worked and what it could do, and I intended to figure out absolutely everything I could about this new tool in my hands.
