For a number of years, backup was boring: move data to tape and then make copies of the tape. Then the virtual tape library (VTL) was introduced, making backup slightly less boring, but basically a variation on the same theme of moving data to tape. Recently, a number of new technologies and techniques have been introduced that have sparked a revolution of sorts within the backup world. In addition, new types of platforms, specifically the advent and widespread adoption of server virtualization technologies, have provided new methods of providing backups that do not fit the traditional notion of backup. In this chapter, the technologies of deduplication, continuous data protection and remote replication, VMWare Recovery API, and cloud targets will be examined.
