Together with Windows Mobile and BlackBerry, the other legacy smartphone operating system with significant market share is Symbian. I use the term legacy because these three platforms predate the shift (beginning around 2007) of smartphones into the mainstream. However, don’t be fooled by its age; Symbian is still a dominant player in the smartphone market, especially outside the United States. As of mid-2009, Symbian still accounts for roughly 50 percent of smartphone use worldwide1 and well over 90 percent in many developing countries2. As such, it shouldn’t be left out of your web gadget plans.
