Abstract

In the mid 1980s, having a command of computing technology became key for people entering the job market, but there was a significant lag in response by educational institutions. First, it took time for the public to recognize that teaching technology skills was not only an appropriate task for public education, it was a vital one in terms of keeping businesses competitive. Second, considerable funding and resources were required for schools to gear up to teach the skills necessary for students to function productively and effectively in a rapidly transforming workplace. And finally, teachers were tackling an entirely new subject area on the fly. Through these challenges, we've learned a lot about how to teach, use, and benefit from technology. It is time to put those lessons to use, because the transition to cloud culture and ultra-mobile computing represents almost as significant a change as did the first wave of the technology revolution.
