DHCP stands for Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol. This name pretty much covers what DHCP is used for: to dynamically configure a host connected to a network so it can use that network. In practice, DHCP is used to give a host an IP address, a subnet mask, a default gateway, a name server, and so on. Basically, it provides a networked device with everything it needs to be able to use the network to which it is connected.
