Abstract

“Video killed the radio star,” the Buggles sang back at the dawn of MTV, and what a prophetic lyric that was. Of course, video had been around for quite a while before MTV launched (for the kids out there, the “M” used to stand for “music”; I don’t know what it stands for these days). But there wasn’t any major delivery mechanism for music videos other than sporadic programs like American Bandstand or Saturday Night Live. With cable television and the appearance of channels with dedicated programming like MTV, music videos became a primary way that a pop culture was introduced to and seduced by bands and singers.
