Abstract

We have looked at techniques for manipulating some basic objects such as dates, numbers, and strings by processing data pulled from the source. Now, let’s look at how we get that data. This is the first of two chapters that discuss how to retrieve and organize data that is not readily available. This chapter focuses on retrieving data from the source file. The next chapter will focus on data that is not in the source file and must be retrieved from an external source such as a flat file or a database.
