Deploying an ASP.NET web application is just the process of copying the directory structure of your application and its files to the target server. Of course, once you’ve copied your application, you need to configure databases, configure security settings, and fine-tune the web server appropriately. The web server used in most scenarios is the one that ships with Windows—IIS. Using IIS, you can configure what directories are exposed as virtual directories and are thereby accessible to other clients that make calls over the network or the Internet.
