Extended stored procedures allow you to extend the inherent functionality of SQL Server 2000 by referencing programs written in languages like C++ as if they were either a system or user-defined stored procedure. As long as the programs are compiled as dynamic-link libraries (DLLs) and contain extended stored procedure API functionality, they can be attached to SQL Server and referenced like the other procedures presented in the book. This chapter will cover several of the system-supplied extended stored procedures that come with SQL Server 2000 and the steps involved in creating a custom extended stored procedure.
