It’s very likely that you picked up this book because you’ve never seen SQL, database development, the Pocket PC, and eMbedded Visual Basic 3.0 all put together in a book title before. We’ve now entered a new phase of computing that’s dominated by small, handheld devices designed to make your life easier. These devices started out as nothing more than convenient, digital personal information managers. Thanks to the Microsoft Windows CE 3.0 operating system and the Pocket PC hardware platform, we now have a powerful force to be reckoned with in the client enterprise computing space. Powerful devices with increased RAM, fast RISC processors, wireless capabilities, and built-in networking are only half of the good news. The other half is that your old friends Visual Basic, COM, Access, and ADO have all come along for the ride. The aim of this book is to help you take the new, miniaturized, versions of these old desktop friends and make you a productive developer of database applications on the Pocket PC. In order to do that, I’ll have to illustrate the capabilities and limitations of these new embedded tools and technologies.
