Automated Software Testing Overview

  • Mary Romero Sweeney

Software Testing is no longer a new field—we’ve come a long way in the past few years. So, why hasn’t producing good software gotten any easier? As our testing knowledge has grown, the software we test has continued to grow more complex and the software business more cutthroat. We need to get software out the door quickly, efficiently, and profitably. To that end, automated software testing possesses a tempting allure: can we make software testing easier by making it somehow automatic? There are many automated test tool manufacturers who are rushing to meet our needs. Automated software testing tools have grown in capability and, of course, price. Using Visual Basic to test software, therefore, has its own allure. It’s a widely used, relatively easy-to-learn programming language. Can it help? Yes—in many ways but certainly not in every way. In this text, we will explore the how, what, when, where, and the all-important why of using Visual Basic for automated software testing.
