At the time of this writing, the .NET Framework ships with just two data providers: the highly optimized System.Data.Sg1Client provider and the slower System.Data.OleDb provider. The latter was provided to allow developers to get at their existing database servers without having to wait for the database vendor in question to come out with a .NET-optimized data provider of their own. Incidentally, there is mention in the online help of an ODBC data provider, and Microsoft’s own Compact Framework for mobile device development does include a SqlServerCE database provider. These two providers were not complete or fully documented in time to be included in this edition.
