Web Services

Abstract

The idea of web services has been a dream of the IT industry for what seems like forever. The ability to compose applications from multiple, disparate services available over the Web was initially put forward by the SOAP standard. SOAP defined a protocol for exchanging XML messages over a network in a language-neutral way. Although still widely used, SOAP has never really fulfilled its potential, and a simpler model has emerged called Representational State Transfer1 (REST). REST is a simple architectural style that utilizes the nature of the Web and its HTTP protocol to enable web services communication.
