Nikki and Her Client Have Mismatched Expectations
I was unusually slow during the last week of September, so I decided to proactively check in with several project managers who I knew had projects in the works, to see if I could offer any assistance. My first meeting was with Nikki Hooper, who was working with her client to update an application on how commissions are paid. Nikki was a mother of three with short blonde hair and green eyes. An extremely conservative woman, Nikki was active on her church board as well as her school’s Parent Teacher Association. This was my first interaction with her, and I could tell she was skeptical about whether or not I could offer any real advice or help. Like many people I have worked with in my role as project management advisor, she also appeared nervous, thinking that my true function was to assess her performance and competence as a project manager, and to determine whether she was someone worth keeping at Mega Manufacturing. I addressed this misconception first.
