Abstract

Tom is a collector. Over the years he has bought and sold the autographs of numerous famous people. You might wonder how he verified that the signature of Abe Lincoln, George Wythe, or James Buchanan were genuine since forging signatures has been prevalent for years. Contemporary forgers steal money from a checking account or alter documents to pass them off as historically significant documents. Documents are verified by comparing a signature known to be genuine on a signature card or by verifying the document in question. Information on the usage can also help with verification. Verifying the George Wythe document was easy. Wythe was a judge in Virginia. The document has the Virginia court seal and an impressed federal tax stamp.
