Creating Criteria Screens

  • Carl GanzJr.

Regardless of the kind of reporting tool you use, you’ll generally need to collect criteria data from your users. Before building a report, you must first know what criteria the user will require in order to limit the data that will be displayed in the report. Creating criteria screens without the proper tools or methodologies can be a rather time-consuming process and may result in an application that is difficult to maintain. The purpose of this chapter is to illustrate how to quickly produce effective criteria screens that will provide the user maximum flexibility to filter report output while offering you, the developer, the most easily maintainable application possible. I cover criteria screen issues for the Web in Chapter 9 and those for PDA devices in Chapter 11.
