Abstract

Firebird supports both fixed-length and variable-length character (string) data types. They can be defined for local usage in any one of a large collection of character sets. Fixed-length character types cannot exceed 32,767 bytes in absolute length; for variable-length types, the limit is reduced by 2 bytes to accommodate a character count with each string stored.
